Recent Bournemouth Flooding
We had our monthly C.T.A. meeting yesterday and reported on all the damage done to various businesses in Charminster Road during the awful flooding on the Thursday of the Air Show week.
Many businesses were severely effected by this. Town and Country Communications at 346-348 Charminster Road (telephone number 01202 514444) were completely flooded and at present are running their business from a portacabin at the back of the shop while it is being refurbished!
They are still open for business while their shop is being refurbished.

Charminster in Bloom
We have ordered 23 hanging baskets from Kings Park Nursery to be displayed on the lampposts with brackets in Charminster Road.
The baskets will be installed and maintained by King’s Park Nursery to ensure they look their best at all times and get watered 3 times a week. We hope to have the baskets installed in either the week beginning 6th June or if not, then definitely the following week.
A first for Charminster will also be grow bags of flowers on the top of the bus shelters from Five Ways Roundabout to the Junction of Heron Court Road. These won’t be installed at the same time as the hanging baskets as they were only ordered at the beginning of May and so need more time to grow, but they should look stunning.
Due to some funding that we received, we have also ordered 2 flower pedestals which have been painted and we hope will soon be installed. We are just waiting to find out the prices of some other planters that Kings Park Nursery have which they will let us have but we need to pay for the painting and planting. Lesley walked through Charminster with the head garden from Kings Park and they looked at all the potential sites for flowers which would not upset the visibility for the traffic or pedestrians.
Sarah from Flowers at 166 and Lauren Day from Ellis Jones have been busy organising fund raising events to make sure the flowers are bigger and better than ever this year, especially as we have our newly painted lamp posts this year.
The first event was a Cocktail evening held at Breeze and we raised £385 for the flowers. The president and several executive members of Bournemouth Chamber of Trade came along and donated £250 towards Charminster in Bloom so more than £600 was raised on the night – A fabulous start. If you want to make a donation to Charminster IN Bloom, please see Sarah, Lauren, Maggie or Lesley.

Charminster Roadworks
Major highway improvements at the junction of Charminster Road, Alma Road and Richmond Park Road are now in the final stages, and are due to be complete on 27th May 2011.
The final phase to the Charminster Road Rescue project will be carried out over the next week and will include road resurfacing and traffic signal works. During this period it will be essential to carry out works over a number of evenings which will extend until 11:30pm.
The major highway scheme has included:
- - the repair and reconstruction of the roads within the junction
- - the replacement of all kerbs
- - the resurfacing of all the pavements
- - upgrading the existing traffic signals
- - improving facilities for pedestrians including the provision of a new controlled crossing facility on Charminster Road
- - 'Advanced Stop Lines' for cyclists installed on all approaches to the junction to improve road safety.
Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "This has been a large scheme and we have aimed to do it in the best possible way for local residents and businesses. I would like to thank residents, businesses and motorists for their patience and would ask that they remain patient throughout the next two weeks whilst we complete the final stages."
"The aim of Road Rescue is to bring our roads and pavements up to the standard expected. Since the launch earlier last year the teams have been working across the Borough to repair potholes, carry out necessary structural works, as well as resurface and refresh road markings across the town."
Lesley Stephenson, Chairman of Charminster Traders Association, added; "These have been much needed major improvement works and the Council has worked hard to keep disruption to a minimum. On behalf of Charminster Traders I would like to thank the Council for programming these works so that they have had as little impact as possible on the local businesses community."
"Once the works are complete we are planning to remind everyone to visit Charminster and an advertising campaign will be launched on 4 June."
The Charminster Road Rescue project will be complete by 27th May 2011 in time for the Charminster Trader’s advertising campaign on 4th June 2011 which is aimed to encourage visitors and shoppers to Charminster.

Presentation by Alison Gidman of the Valuation Office Agency on Business Rates
All Charminster Traders Association members are invited to a FREE presentation by Alison Gidman of the Valuation Office Agency on Business Rates.
A number of businesses are concerned about the increases they are facing in their business rates from April 2010.
Alison was keen to set up a meeting as soon as possible so that if anything arises as a result of this meeting for individuals - or blocks of properties - to come forward where it is felt the level of values may be incorrect, then there would be time for the office to take all matters into consideration prior to the publication of the full list and where possible carry out amendments prior to it coming into force.
Apparently bills will be received mid March, and beyond this date you are to register an appeal, if you feel the information the Valuation Office Agency have used in your summary valuation is incorrect, then there is still time to question this prior to invoices being sent out.
The meeting is on Wednesday, 17th February at the Executive Suite at AFC Bournemouth from 6.00pm
It is expected to last till 8.00pm and tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.
Please do try and attand as it will be a great oportunity to get a greater understanding of your business rates and how they have been calculated. Alison is a expert in this field and will hopefully be able to answer any questions that you may have.
This event is run by Bournemouth Chamber
